Workshops: The Normans

In these workshops we analyze the power vacuum after Edward the Confessor, re-enact the Battle of Hastings and look at the Norman impact on England through the new feudal system.

Session 1 – Grasping Godwinssons?

This dramatic Intro session sets the scene by examining the power vacuum left by Edward the Confessor, the meeting of Harold and Duke William and the failure of Tostig.

Session 2 – Barbaric Battles: Hastings!

A full set-piece, costumed and live re-enactment of the battle with all the detail and key turning points acted out by the young people themselves using our cutting edge foam weapons and equipment

Session 3 – The Feudal Fortress

A vivid round robin of characters, dress up and problem solving combining both an understanding of the new Norman Feudal system and the key people in the Castle.

Session 4 – Conquest & Castles

Students learn the construction and deployment of castles as they plan, build and test the quality of their own constructions.

Session 5– Severe Sieges

In this amazing finale, using the castle built earlier in the day we conduct a real time siege thus cementing the understanding
of castle warfare in conquest and control!
